브뤼셀 태생의 스베르츠는 1646년과 1653– 54년경 로마에서 일하였습니다. 브뤼셀에 몇 년간 갔다온 후로 그는 암스테르담에 가서 1661년에 행적이 기록되었습니다. 그는 아마 이 심도 깊은 개인적 그림을 자기 부인의 종교적 행동과 자선에 관심이 있었던 네덜란드에서 그렸을 것입니다. 그는 1662년에 프랑스 선교자들과 함께 페르시아를 여행한 다음, 혼자서 인도 고아로 가서 거기서 1664년에 사망했습니다. 스베르츠의 개인적인 엄격함은 결코 색상, 명암 및 표현상의 놀라운 세련됨에 손상을 주지 않았습니다.
