콘스탄티누스1세 두상
최초의 기독교 황제인 콘스탄티누스대제(재위306–337년)는 로마제국의 새로운 수도를 정하고 자신의 이름을 따서 콘스탄티노플이라고 명명하였습니다. 흉상 또는 등신대보다 더 큰 조각상의 일부였을 것으로 추정되는 이 두상이 제작될 무렵 콘스탄티누스는 이교도였던 직전의 황제들과 자신을 구분할 목적으로 공식적인 이미지를 채택하였습니다. 긴 얼굴, 깔끔하게 정리된 두발, 말쑥하게 면도를 한 외관의 이 초상 두상은 아우구스투스 황제(재위 기원전 28– 서기 14년) 또는 트라야누스 황제(재위 98– 117년)와 같은 선한 황제에 대한 기억을 상기시키려는 의도적인 시도를 반영합니다.
