Burgonets and gorgets were among the most practical and widely used forms of armor for protecting the vital areas of the head and neck. Examples like those displayed here were worn by common soldiers, mercenaries, and militia troops across Europe. As such, they were a familiar sight during Valentin's lifetime, and his inclusion of them adds to the sense of immediacy and temporality in his works.
