The Cathedral Precincts, Rochester

Sydney Lee British

Not on view

A view of St. Nicholas parish church (which was built as an alternative to Rochester cathedral after an argument with the monks), and the adjacent Kentish Tower, a 15th structure of rubble ragstone. To the right is C. W. Nash's shop, a brick building with an awning at street level, then the 16th century College Gate with a wooden gatehouse above. The gate leads from the High Street into College Yard. It is sometime's called Jasper's Gateway, because Charles Dickens included it as the residence of the fictional John Jasper, choirmaster of Cloiserham in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." The view appears in reverse.
