"The Seven Towers" I Series
Walid Siti Iraqi
Not on view
Using a transparent wash, Walid Siti depicts the spiral minaret from the Great Mosque of Samarra, one of Iraq’s most important historic monuments. The structure is overlaid with a grid of crisscrossing marks that resemble a scaffolding or protective barrier. Like many of Siti’s works, this piece reflects a veneration for archaeological sites in his home country, coupled with a sense of regret for their destruction in modern times.
