International Silver Company, which was incorporated in 1898 in Meriden, Connecticut through the consolidation of seventeen independent New England silver firms, represents an important trend in the history of American silversmithing. Several of the independent shops that constituted its original membership were founded in the early nineteenth century. The company is best-known for its high-quality Modernist designs, especially those dating from the 1920s and into the following decades. The present bowl is a large and stunning example of the firm’s work, and one of a small group of objects in which rose quartz is incorporated into the design.
