The Entombment of Christ

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 305

In this powerful composition, showing three holy men, Saint John, the Virgin Mary, and two holy women, the partially shrouded body of Christ is lowered into the Sepulchre. The sweeping draperies and facial types suggest Netherlandish influence in the middle Rhine region, beginning about 1400.
