Dikran G. Kelekian

Milton Avery American

Not on view

Avery, who is known for his bucolic landscapes and seascapes, painted only a handful of portraits that were not of his wife and daughter. This one depicts the famous antiquities dealer Dikran Kelekian (1868–1951), who, after 1900, also championed modern art. Seated in his Fifty-seventh Street gallery, he is surrounded by objects from his stock—a Coptic textile on the wall and a small Ancient Near Eastern sculpture of a bird.
