The Artist Project: David Salle

Artist David Salle reflects on Marsden Hartley in this episode of The Artist Project.
From March 2015 to June 2016, we invited 120 artists—local, national, and global—to choose individual works of art or galleries that sparked their imaginations. In this online series, artists reflect on what art is, what inspires them from across 5,000 years of art, and in so doing, they reveal the power of a museum and The Met.

"It's always a great mystery how a painter conveys feeling."

Artist David Salle reflects on Marsden Hartley in this episode of The Artist Project—an online series in which artists respond to works of art in The Met collection.

About the Artist
David Salle, born in 1952, is an American painter, printmaker, and essayist.

“Mingus in Mexico,” is a painting by David Salle full of juxtaposed visuals including outlined chairs, tables, lamps and African sculpture, overlaying a pictorial backdrop derived from 16th and 17th century tapestries. There is an orange speech-bubble empty of words near the center of the canvas, and there are two smaller monochrome canvases inset within the work.
