(New York, August 31, 2021)--The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, a leading research organization dedicated exclusively to the study of modernism, announced its 2021–2022 Fellowships.
Adrienn Kácsor (Ph.D. Candidate, Northwestern University) has been selected for a two-year pre-doctoral fellowship at the Research Center to complete her dissertation titled “Migrant Aesthetics: Hungarian Artists in the Service of Soviet Internationalism, 1919-1956. Jason Mientkiewicz (Ph.D. Candidate, Johns Hopkins University), who is entering his second year, will continue his dissertation on the Russian avant-garde group UNOVIS and the relationship between abstract art and political collectivity in revolutionary Russia. Alexandra Chiriac (Ph.D., University of St. Andrews), will also enter the second year of her fellowship and continue to work on her second book that explores urban modernity in interwar Bucharest through the means of design and visual culture, and traces the city’s networks of connectivity to Paris and New York. Hyewon Yoon (Ph.D., Harvard University) has been selected for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship and will explore the work of Alexey Brodovitch by considering how his graphisme in mid-century commercial design is based upon an aesthetic of pastiche that draws on the technical and formal resources of a variety of European avant-garde movements.

Each year, the Research Center awards Leonard A. Lauder Fellowships for pre- and post-doctoral candidates. Recent awards have supported the work of scholars focused on Art Brut, Czech modernism, Dada, Brazilian modern art, interwar European Abstraction, Russian Constructivism, and Surrealism, in addition to the agents, dealers, and reception of Cubism. The institution also supports the invited residencies of senior scholars of modern art, who pursue their own studies while participating in the activities of the Research Center.
