Annual Juried Exhibition Displays Artistic Creativity of New York City Public School Students
Returning to The Met for the tenth consecutive year, the exhibition
P.S. Art: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids features works of art in a variety of media created by public school students in New York City. The exhibition will be on view and open to the public from June 13 through October 29, 2017, at The Met Fifth Avenue. There will be an opening ceremony for students, parents, and teachers at 5 p.m., with remarks at 5:30, on Tuesday, June 13, during the city’s annual Museum Mile Festival. Additionally, select art works from the exhibition will be featured on the digital screens in Times Square beginning Tuesday, June 20, courtesy of the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC).
P.S. Art 2017: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids is a project of the New York City Department of Education and Studio in a School Association, Inc.
The 103 works in this year’s exhibition represent 105 students ranging from prekindergarten through the 12th grade in public schools throughout the five boroughs.
P.S. Art highlights the talent and creativity of these young artists and champions art making as a way to appreciate the cultures, life experiences, and traditions across the city. The works were chosen from over 1,000 submissions, and a jury comprised of distinguished members of the art community, including members of The Met staff, made the final decisions.
The Met will provide admission passes to the Museum to all the student artists represented in the exhibition to encourage them to return frequently during the course of the show.
Dignitaries from the New York City Department of Education, including Chancellor Carmen Fariña; Studio in a School; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be among the speakers at the private ceremony prior to the opening.
For the display in Times Square, 27 works of art from the exhibition will be shown for four minutes every hour from Tuesday, June 20, through Friday, June 23, on signs owned and operated by Clear Channel Outdoor. The collaborative project will kick off with a press conference at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, on Military Island in Times Square (located on Broadway, between 43th and 44th Streets).

P.S. Art, we can see just how much art impacts the lives of these gifted students,” said Daniel H. Weiss, President and interim Chief Executive Officer of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “It is so rewarding to see this exhibition return for its tenth year.”
Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Museum’s Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education, commented, “The art on display in this exhibition is extraordinary, but the real power of this show is seeing the diversity of voices and approaches to making art. The range of artistic choices and perspectives speaks to the many stories that grow in New York City. It is all the more monumental to have a selection of these works displayed on the jumbotrons in Times Square.”
The
P.S. Art exhibition is just one of the many ways in which the Museum fosters the creativity and education of New York City students. Each year, The Met provides free visits to more than 77,000 New York City public school students, and over 2,300 New York City public school teachers and administrators participate in professional development workshops at the Museum.
