September 1, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present a MetFridays program titled In-Between Fashion, with an evening of events that include a conversation on street style, art-making activities, and a design contest inspired by the exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.
The fashion design contest will feature graduate and undergraduate student finalists from top design schools across the country. Beginning at 5 p.m., their work will be on view in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, and winners will be announced at 8 p.m. The public can vote on their favorite designs on the Museum’s Facebook page from 5 to 7:30 p.m. A complete list of finalists can be found on The Met’s website.
Street style as a global phenomenon will be explored in a panel conversation with Greg Foley, creative director of Visionaire magazine; Phil Oh, Vogue.com street style photographer; and Shelley Fox, Donna Karan Professor of Fashion at Parsons School of Design at The New School. Fashion writer and producer Andrew Bevan will moderate the talk, in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium from 6 to 7 p.m.
Throughout the evening, a party will honor the fashion design contest finalists, with music by DJ Reborn, in The American Wing Café from 5 to 8:15 p.m. Drinks and a special cocktail will be available for purchase.
Fashion illustrator Holly Nichols (@hnicholsillustration) will sketch the best fashions of the night. Other activities include Drop-in Drawing, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., where visitors can explore drawing techniques inspired by American fashions of the 19th and 20th centuries (gallery 771, the Terian Family Gallery); Drop-in Art Making, 6 to 8:30 p.m., where the focus will be on creating accessories (gallery 305, Medieval Sculpture Hall); and a Photo Booth, which will be open from 5 to 8:30 p.m. (gallery 700, The Charles Engelhard Court).
