Philip F. Maritz and William Pierson Rayner
Elected to Metropolitan Museum Board

(New York, March 18, 2016)—Philip F. (“Flip”) Maritz and William Pierson Rayner were elected to the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it was announced today by Daniel Brodsky, The Met’s Chairman. Mr. Maritz will serve as an Elective Trustee, and Mr. Rayner as an Honorary Trustee. The elections took place at the March 8 meeting of the Board.

Mr. Brodsky commented: “Mr. Maritz brings to The Met Board a broad range of business, real estate and board experience, particularly at art museums and universities. Both he and Mr. Rayner have a history of involvement and support of our institution, and I am pleased to welcome them to the Board and to new leadership roles at The Met.”

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Met, continued: “‘Flip’ Maritz and Billy Rayner continue a tradition of strong trustee commitment to the arts. Flip’s interest in photography—a subject that he first pursued in college—has connected him to The Met over the last decade through his involvement with The Met’s Department of Photographs. Billy also brings a family tradition of participation in and passion for the arts. I look forward to working with them both.”

Philip F. Maritz

Born in St. Louis and educated at Princeton, Mr. Maritz received an MBA with a focus on real estate and finance from Stanford and recently completed a Fellowship at Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.

He is a co-founder of Maritz, Wolff & Co., a private lodging investment fund with investments in luxury hotel, resort, and management assets under the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Rosewood, Fairmont, Dolce, and Park Hyatt brand names in the U.S. and abroad. For these and related activities, Mr. Maritz was honored as Clayton (St. Louis), Missouri Business Person of the Year as well as the New York City UJA Chapter Lodging Executive of the Year.

Mr. Maritz has served on numerous not-for-profit boards, including the St. Louis chapter of The Salvation Army, Saint Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and the Management Board of the Stanford Business School. He currently serves on the Advisory Council of the Princeton University Art Museum and is a Trustee of the American University in Cairo. At The Met, Mr. Maritz is a member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of Photographs, and since 2004 he has been a member of the Department of Photographs’ Stieglitz Society friends group along with his wife Jennifer.

William Pierson Rayner

Mr. Rayner worked at Condé Nast Publications for 30 years and is a former columnist for Vogue, House & Garden, and Vanity Fair magazines. Mr. Rayner co-authored a cookbook, Gourmet Cooking by the Clock, and also wrote a biography of influential women of the 20th century. A recent two-volume publication of excerpts from his travel diaries is illustrated with his own watercolors. Beginning in 1986, his watercolors have been shown in galleries in East Hampton, Palm Beach, New York, and London.

Born in Washington, D.C., Mr. Rayner was educated at the Taft School and the University of Virginia. He has served on the boards of the Rhode Island School of Design and the Parrish Art Museum (Southampton, New York). Currently he is a member of the board of the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, as well as an advisory director at the Henry Street Settlement. Mr. Rayner and his wife, Katharine, have a long history of support for The Met’s programming and capital projects, including leading contributions to the New American Wing Galleries for Paintings, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts, which opened in 2012.
