On Monday, December 23, the eighth and current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s popular exhibition Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom (on view until February 23) with his wife, Madam Yoo (Ban) Soon-taek. He commented: “I am delighted to see the special exhibition Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom at The Metropolitan Museum of Art—this is a rare opportunity to experience the glory of ancient Korean culture in New York.” The exhibition, which is dedicated to the magnificent art created between 400 and 800 A.D., the seminal period of the Silla Kingdom, includes numerous works that are designated “National Treasures” or “Treasures” with few parallel examples in Western museums. Highlights include spectacular gold regalia and jewelry (such as the gold crown from Hwangnam Daechong Tomb, National Treasure 191), rare objects from Central and West Asia that were imported to Korea, and elegant Buddhist sculptures and reliquaries (including the gilt bronze pensive bodhisattva, National Treasure 83). More than 88, 000 people have visited the exhibition since it opened at the Metropolitan Museum on November 4.

반기문 유엔 사무총장, 한국 “신라” 특별전 관람을 위해 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄 방문
12월 23일 월요일, 반기문 현 유엔 사무총장이 부인 유순택 여사와 함께 “황금의 나라: 신라” 관람을 위해 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄을 찾았다. (전시 2월 23일까지) 반 총장은 “메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄에서 <황금의 나라 신라> 특별전을 보게 되어 매우 기쁘다. 뉴욕에서 한국의 찬란한 고대문화를 경험할 수 있는 매우 드문 기회다.”라며 소감을 밝혔다. 서기 400 년에서 800년에 이르는 신라 전성기를 집중 조명한 이번 전시는 서구뮤지엄에서는 좀처럼 보기 힘들었던 국보와 보물들을 다수 포함하고 있다. 대표 유물로는 신라 고분에서 출토된 금관 (국보 191호)을 비롯한 황금 장신구, 중앙아시아와 서아시아로부터 유입된 희귀한 유물들, 금동반가사유상 (국보 83호)을 포함한 정교하게 제작된 불교 조각과 사리구 등이 있다. “신라” 특별전은 11월4일 오픈 이래(이후) 현재까지 총 8만 5천명이 넘는 관람객이 찾았다.
