The Metropolitan Museum collaborates with PEN World Voices Festival – one of the world’s biggest international literary gatherings – on the kickoff event of the Festival’s 2012 season at The Metropolitan Museum of Art with a performance by the Kronos Quartet (David Harrington and John Sherba, violins; Hank Dutt, viola; and Jeffrey Zeigler, cello) with noted writers Tony Kushner, Marjane Satrapi, and Rula Jebreal. For nearly 40 years, the Kronos Quartet has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. In 2011, Kronos became the only recipient of both the Polar Music Prize and the Avery Fisher Prize, two of the most prestigious awards given to musicians. Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. - Chanticleer
The acclaimed vocal ensemble’s annual concert at the Metropolitan Museum features a program in honor of the completion of the American Wing renovation. Beginning with two works by Mexican composer Antonio de Salazar (1650-1715), the program proceeds to songs by William Walker, Samuel Barber, John Corigliano, and Eric Whitacre; features Steven Sametz’s Not an End of Loving, settings of three poems by Walt Whitman that the group premiered in 2010; and four selections from Stephen Paulus’s The Lotus Lovers, a 2011 work commissioned for Chanticleer by Mrs. Mary Rodgers and Mr. Henry Guettel. The program will conclude with a set of traditional songs and classics by Ellington, Rodgers & Hart, and Arlen.
The New American Wing Galleries for Paintings, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts, the final stage of the renovation of the American Wing, opened in January 2012.
Among Chanticleer’s season activities are a 10-country tour in early 2012 with return visits to Europe’s most renowned concert halls, including the Musikverein (Vienna), Béla Bartók Concert Hall (Budapest), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and Philharmonic Hall (Vilnius). The season also includes Chanticleer’s performance on the soundtrack of the 10th-anniversary release by Microsoft of its legendary video game Halo, the ensemble’s first live film score performance. www.chanticleer.org

“It’s hard to find better chamber-music playing in New York than in the cellist Edward Arron’s series,” said the New Yorker in April 2011 about the Metropolitan Museum Artists in Concert. For this concert, Edward Arron, its artistic director, has crafted a program in honor of the completion of the American Wing renovation: Amy Beach’s Dreaming for Cello and Piano (1892/1937); Henry Cowell’s Seven Paragraphs for String Trio (1925); John Adams’s Shaker Loops for String Septet (1978); and Dvorák’s String Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 97, “American.” The musicians include Jennifer Frautschi and Laura Frautschi, violins; Colin Jacobsen, violin and viola; Nicholas Cords, viola; Edward Arron and Eric Jacobsen, cello; Kurt Muroki, bass; and Bernard Rose, piano.

Sargent’s extraordinary Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau), which has intrigued and challenged viewers ever since its debut in the 1884 Paris Salon, is an icon of style and sophistication. H. Barbara Weinberg, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, explores the portrait’s creation, exhibition, and presence in scholarship and popular culture.
