Metropolitan Museum Announces Appointment of Christina Alphonso as Associate Manager for Administration at The Cloisters

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has appointed Christina Alphonso to the position of Associate Manager for Administration at The Cloisters, effective December 19. (A branch of the Metropolitan, The Cloisters is America's only museum dedicated exclusively to the art of the Middle Ages.)

Ms. Alphonso, who most recently held the title of Departmental Coordinator, has been a member of the staff of The Cloisters in various roles for 14 years. In her new post, she will oversee daily operations at The Cloisters – including its gardens – and will continue to facilitate the Building Conservation Project, coordinating conservation of the museum's exterior and renovation of its galleries.

Peter Barnet, the Michel David-Weill Curator in Charge of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, commented: "Christina's thorough knowledge of The Cloisters and its collection and her deep commitment to the museum's surrounding community – a neighborhood of which she is also a long-time resident – are important assets for successfully managing The Cloisters on a day-to-day basis and for bringing to completion the construction projects in which we are currently involved. I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role."

Ms. Alphonso has a bachelor's degree in the history of art from Bryn Mawr College and a master's degree specializing in Medieval art from Hunter College, The City University of New York.

She succeeds José A. Ortiz, who was Manager for Administration for the last nine years. He was appointed Chief Administrator of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution, in October.
