Location: The Met Fifth Avenue, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education

The exhibition celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the program, recognizing the arts and creativity of New York City public school students

(New York, June 13, 2024)—The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host its annual exhibition of P.S. Art 2024: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids, a juried exhibition of artwork by prekindergarten through grade 12 students from New York City public schools across all five boroughs. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the exhibition and the 17th P.S Art exhibition hosted by the Museum. The exhibition will be on view from June 18 through October 20, 2024, at The Met Fifth Avenue in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. There will be an opening ceremony for students, parents, and teachers at 5 pm, with remarks at 5:30 pm, on Tuesday, June 18, during the city's Museum Mile Festival.

The exhibition will feature 126 works chosen from over 1,200 submissions spanning mediums including painting, mixed-media, and sculpture. The works were selected by a panel of distinguished members of the New York City art community, including contemporary artist Carrie Mae Weems and staff at The Met. The selection of artworks represent students’ vision and voice, demonstrating their creativity and observation through various mediums.

P.S. Art 2024: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids is a project of the New York City Public Schools and Studio in a School NYC.

Heidi Holder, Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chair of Education at The Met, said: “Art experiences are some of the main ways that young people develop skills like creativity, empathy, and critical thinking. These skills are paramount as we enter the next technological age. These skills propel young artists to examine our world in the hope of seeing it more clearly and The Met is proud to show these over 100 works that do just that and more. We applaud the skill and creativity of the artists in the show and equally applaud the families, educators and others who support New York City artists as they dare to imagine better futures for us all.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) will host a weeklong digital art presentation showcasing 48 of the works in the show, displaying digital reproductions of the artworks on OUTFRONT’s iconic screen, The Cube, on 2 Times Square in Duffy Square. The kick-off event is scheduled for June 21, featuring remarks by city officials and student artists. The selected artworks in Times Square will be featured twice per hour through July 6. The winners of the P.S Art 2024 will have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork at The Authority Midtown Bus Terminal Art Gallery, located at 625 8th Ave. and 40th St. near 9th Avenue end of the terminal. Date and time for the exhibition is to be determined this year.

“New York City is home to some of the world’s greatest arts and cultural institutions. Opportunities like this allow our young people to witness the power of their creativity, showcasing their work for guests and New Yorkers alike to experience,” said Schools Chancellor David C. Banks. “I am grateful to our partners at the Met for their commitment to supporting the arts in our schools, and I am looking forward to marveling at the creations of our kids.”

Alison Scott-Williams, President, Studio in a School NYC, LLC, added: “P.S. Art 2024 celebrates the profound impact arts education has on youth. Through the arts, students are encouraged to dream, imagine, and explore, all while gaining unparalleled opportunities for social and emotional growth. It’s a wonder to behold the artworks on view in this year’s exhibition, each and every piece speaks to the power of the visual arts. On behalf of Studio in a School, I want to congratulate the student artists in this year’s show on their outstanding achievements. With heartfelt gratitude, I extend our appreciation to The Met and the NYC Public Schools for their exceptional partnership.”

The Met will provide admission passes to the Museum to all student artists represented in the exhibition to encourage them to return frequently during the course of the show.

The P.S. Art exhibition is just one of the many ways in which the Museum fosters the creativity and education of New York City students. Each year, The Met provides free visits to more than 88,000 New York City public school students, and more than 1,000 New York City public school teachers and administrators participate in professional development workshops at the Museum.

All of the works in the exhibition will also be featured on The Met website, as well as on social media using the hashtag #PSArt2024.
