On September 1, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will welcome 50 fellows to take part in The Met’s 2023-2024 Fellowship Program. The cohort, comprised of 14 senior and 36 junior scholars, join the Museum from 14 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Egypt, France, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Over the course of their twelve-month residencies, each scholar will have access to the Museum’s renowned staff, libraries, collections, research facilities, and research laboratories. In addition, fellows are given the time and financial support necessary to further develop their own research projects. Book manuscripts, doctoral dissertations, scholarly articles, conservation training, and analytical experiments are among the intellectual pursuits developed in dialogue with The Met’s collections, curators, and conservators. Fellows are paired with a supervisor in a host department with whom they will confer, collaborate, and otherwise take advantage of available Museum resources as they further their projects.
Working across the fields of art history, anthropology, ethnomusicology, museum studies, critical theory, philosophy, museum studies, historiography, conservation, and the material sciences, fellows’ projects span a vast array of topics which reflect the diversity of The Met’s robust collections. Among this year’s topics are an investigation into the transnational networks of immigrant and diasporic artists on the Lower East Side of Manhattan; a close study of 55 textile objects geographically attributed to Palestine; an in-depth analysis of the figure of the Sable Venus and the Black Odysseus; and an exploration of the physical and social history of Banjos.
A Met fellowship allows scholars from around the world opportunities to immerse themselves in a curatorial, research, conservation, education, or scientific research department at the Museum. Drawing on the strengths, resources, and expertise of their host departments, fellows will use the Museum as a vibrant space for dedicated research, professional development, and the dynamic exchange of ideas. During their terms, Fellows will have unique access to the Museum's inner workings and are fully integrated into the life of The Met.
Additional details about current and former fellows, including a full list of fellowship projects, institutional affiliations, and areas of study, can be found on The Met’s website.
