저녁: 도수교가 있는 풍경
이 작품은 당대를 대표하는 기념비적인 4점의 풍경화 기획 연작 중 하나입니다. 1818년 여름 파리에서 그려진 이 풍경화들은 18세기 프랑스 화가 조제프 베르네 스타일의 장식으로 구상되었습니다. 이 풍경화는 제리코가 1817년에 방문한 이탈리아 시골의 유적(여기서는 스폴레토 도수교가 보인다)에 이제 막 움트기 시작한 낭만주의 미학과 당시 영국과 프랑스에서 유행하던 “숭고미” 개념의 특징인, 마치 폭풍이 몰아칠 듯 어두운 하늘과 격동적인 분위기를 절묘하게 결합시킨 작품입니다.
