보살 토르소

보살상은 4세기부터 5세기에 걸쳐 대승불교(인도 북부의 불교 종파)에서 중요한 숭배 대상이었습니다. 간다라 지역 사원에서는 구제의 불에 대한 점증하는 신도의 요구를 반영하여 불교의 자비심을 구현하는 등신대 이상의 관음보살상을 제작하였습니다. 보살 신앙은 이러한 염원을 가장 잘 대변하였습니다. 제작 당시의 높이가 약 3미터 정도였던 이 대형 석상 토르소는 사리-발롤 사원에서 출토된 것으로 추정되며 이 시대의 뛰어난 유물입니다. 이 석상의 육감적인 신체표현과 입고 있는 승복 묘사는 헬레니즘시대 서구와의 교류를 여전히 반영하고 있습니다.
