아만 장의 초상화

쇠라가 자신의 친구이며 화가인 에드몬드 프랑수아 아만 장(1860– 1936)을 그린 습작은 19세기 초상화 소묘 중 걸작품입니다. 아만 장과 쇠라는 파리에서 함께 회화를 공부했으며 1879년에는 스튜디오를 공유하였습니다. 이 초상화는 1883년 파리 살롱전에 전시되었으며 당시 23세가 된 쇠라가 처음으로 일반에 공개했던 작품입니다. 질감이 거친 종이에 콩테 크레용을 사용하는 쇠라 특유의 기법은 작품에 광휘와 명암의 조화를 주고 고전적인 균형감을 유지하는 포즈의 옆모습은 시대를 초월하여 영원히 지속되는 미적 특질을 부여합니다.
