구데아가 다스렸던 수메리아의 도시 국가인 라가슈는 이 조각상이 발견된 것으로 추정되는 고대 도시 기르수를 둘러싸고 있었습니다. 좌상의 인물 예복에 “왕조의 시조이신 구데아를 장수하게 하소서”라는 설형문자가 세로로 새겨져 있습니다. 신전에 모셔졌을 것으로 생각되는 이 좌상에 새겨진 명문은 라가슈 신들에게 통치자의 장수를 직접 탄원하는 수단이 되었을 것입니다. 진지한 표정과 주름진 손에서 좌상의 역할에 합당한 경건함과 차분함이 느껴집니다.
