조지 워싱턴
스튜어트는 조지 워싱턴의 초상화를 그리기 위해 1793년 3월에 런던에서 미국으로 돌아 왔습니다. 이 예는 본 그룹이라고 알려져 있는 우측을 향하고 있는 워싱턴의 상반신 초상화 18점 중 하나입니다. 이 그림에는 스튜어트가 워싱턴의 실물 초상을 처음으로 시도한 증거가 있는데 바로 흑색 물감 밑에 노란 버튼의 붉은 밤색 코트로서 스튜어트가 원래 본 초상화를 그릴 당시에 이 그림을 생각해 냈음을 제시합니다. 스튜어트가 그린 워싱턴의 초상화는 동시에 실물같고 영상적입니다. 여기에서 화가는 푸른 회색 그늘로 피부색을 능숙하게 표현해 냈는데 그 결과 워싱턴의 얼굴이 대리석 같은 기념적인 초상이 되었습니다.
