ルノワールは、1891年末または1892年初頭にフランス政府よりルクセンブルグ美術館への作品の出展を勧められました。ルクセンブルグ美術館は、その頃パリに新設された、当代の芸術家による作品の展示を専門とする美術館でした。ルノワールはピアノに向かう二人の少女の主題を選び、出展した作品が厳選な審査を受けることを考慮して、5枚の油彩の習作で構図を練るなど、制作に多大な労力を費やしました。
