Integral to Krishna Reddy’s art is the transformation—of the image as the composition evolves and of natural objects, such as seeds, as they develop and change form. In Maternity, he evokes the development both of an embryonic seed and of a mother’s body as she grows, gives birth, and then nurtures a child. Works such as Maternity demonstrate the transformations possible in printmaking as Krishna sought to challenge the standardization of printing by altering colors, tones, and other effects to create variations within each edition (the limited set of proofs pulled from a plate that are then signed and numbered by the artist).
