Louis XV with His Family during a “Grand Couvert”

French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Although the fan shows only a few spectators at the Grand Couvert, in reality the meals the royal family ate in public were crowded affairs. Customarily set for dessert with pyramids of fruit and sweetmeats, the table here is horseshoe-shaped. Louis XV sits in the center, directly in front of a portrait of his great-grandfather as Apollo.
