View of Versailles

Published by Pierre Gallays

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Visitors sought to encounter the king when he arrived at or departed from Versailles, as illustrated in this engraving. In an expression of dynastic continuity, the print depicts Louis XIV and his great-grandson, the future Louis XV, riding in the royal carriage as it crosses the Place d’Armes (Parade Grounds) in front of the palace.
