Tavern Sign

This rare surviving sign for the tavern or coffeehouse A la Gaité, probably established in the town of Versailles in 1760, shows three merry drinkers. A la Gaité was one of many establishments near the palace that catered to travelers in need of refreshment after their journey to Versailles—or simply looking for a place to touch up their wigs, as did a doctor from Sweden, Martin Roland, in September 1754.
