Smallsword carried by the Gardes du Corps

Sword cutler Guilmin French

Not on view

This smallsword belonged to a member of the Gardes du Corps, the premier cavalry unit charged with the protection of the king and his household. Drawn from the aristocracy and distinguished by their courtly manner, members of this group would have been a common sight for visitors to Versailles. The use of precious metal suggests that the sword was intended for an officer.
