Two Lohans

Not on view

This Persian painting shows that the whimsical appeal of Chinese luohan imagery spread far beyond China’s
cultural sphere. Walking with a pet tiger, two jovial monks lean toward one another, their mouths thrown open in animated conversation. The sharply drawn lines and transparent watercolor pigments are marks of the Persian artist’s adaptation of this imported iconography to local tools, materials, and techniques. It is likely that luohan images found their way to Persia as part of regular diplomatic exchanges between Ming China and Persian courts during the fifteenth century.
