Head of a Luohan

China

Not on view

This monumental sculpture likely represents the elderly monk Kashyapa, a direct disciple of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and one of the original luohans. It was probably once part of a triad along with Shakyamuni and Ananda, another luohan disciple.
