Seated luohan (arhat) in a grotto

China

Not on view

A venerable old luohan (probably Nakula) meditates on a rocky outcropping beneath a tree. The fantastical quality of the scene is enhanced by the impressively large and valuable piece of lapis lazuli from which it is carved. With relatively shallow relief, the carver created a sense of depth behind the luohan that adds to the mystery of the scene.
