Hartley

Alice Neel American

Not on view

The dynamic tension between realism and abstraction that characterizes much of Neel’s work is particularly evident in this portrait of the younger of her two sons. As much as the portrait is concerned with evoking Hartley’s youthful good looks and plain expression, it also seems to be about the act of painting itself. The viewer is always aware of the artist’s (left) hand at work, dragging and scrubbing with her brush, gestures that seem to have a life of their own.
