Pregnant Maria

Alice Neel American

Not on view

By most accounts, this is the first in Neel’s remarkable series of pregnant female nudes. Compared to expectant mothers in other paintings in the series, Maria appears confident and self-possessed, completely unperturbed by her bodily and personal conditions. Neel’s broad passages of color powerfully articulate her volumetric breasts, belly, and thighs, enhanced by pregnancy.
