Mother and Child by the Sea

Johan Christian Dahl Norwegian

Not on view

Writing to the first owner of this painting, Dahl identified the figures on the shore as the wife and child of a fisherman awaiting his safe arrival on the approaching boat. Several elements that would become fundamental to Balke's artistic vision are present: moonlight, the sea, and the fragility of human life subject to the forces of nature.
