Majorelle's innovative ceramics, glass, and furniture helped to define Art Nouveau at the end of the nineteenth century. Characterized by sinuous lines derived from organic forms, this florid style liberated designers who sought a new formal language in opposition to the dry historicism of academic art. The decorative motifs of this vase are representative of Majorelle's stylistic approach, which he promoted through the École de Nancy, an association of Art Nouveau artists. Note: C2.
