Pot

Designer Juan Hamilton American

Not on view

Typical of Hamilton's work, this heavily polished, biomorphic pot recalls both the indigenous pottery of South America, where the artist was raised, and the simple, organic shapes of ceramics from Japan, where he traveled in 1970. Hamilton created this vessel while he was working as Georgia O'Keeffe's assistant in New Mexico. Its curvilinear form and weathered surface also relate to the vocabulary of O'Keeffe's austere late paintings, which often depicted rocks and bones. Note: D flat 2.
