Autio produced his voluptuously shaped and brightly painted ceramic sculptures at a factory kiln in a Montana brick-making facility. These nonutilitarian vessels display a Matisse-like use of bold color and sweeping brushstrokes, which helped to elevate the status of ceramics in America from craft to fine art. Note: G flat 4.
