Though chiefly known as a painter, Miró was also a prolific sculptor and ceramicist, creating more than four hundred vessels and tiled murals beginning in the early 1940s. This vase, produced collaboratively with the Catalan artist Josep Llorens Artigas in the midst of World War II, represents one of Miró's earliest forays into the medium. The markings and biomorphic forms reflect Miró's interest in automatism, a Surrealist technique that sought to elicit unbridled expression from the unconscious. Note: F2.
