Manuscript Illumination with Initial V, from a Bible

French

Not on view

This leaf comes from a Bible that was contemporary with the Winchester Bible but made at the French Cistercian Abbey of Pontigny in Burgundy. The Cistercians generally did not favor gold or figural imagery. Here the initial "V" presents two lions nestled within encircling vines. The dense tangling foliage and latticework were likely influenced by an earlier English style of illumination. The same motifs appear throughout the borders and initials of the Winchester Bible, as seen in the initial "S" also in the exhibition.
