Cathedral Corner
Gerhard Richter German
Not on view
This painting is one of a pair that Richter based on a photograph in his Atlas. In this more closely cropped composition, a narrow shaft of sharp light cuts across the building’s exterior walls—but instead of illuminating the corner of the unnamed cathedral, it bleaches out most architectural details, disallowing any firm recognition of place. Through this focus on the effects of light to dematerialize form and accentuate the effects of the blur, Richter seems to suggest that any potential spiritual or symbolic connotations are evacuated by the concentrated beam.
