The Hours of Jeanne d'Evreux, Queen of France

Jean Pucelle French

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 13

In the margin at the right, a tiny, fancifully conceived hunter schemes to capture a unicorn. It is not clear whether he will use his spear or the small domed cover—which seems better suited to trapping the nearby rabbit. The image is found amid prayers relating to the relics of Saint Louis. It is one of three unicorns found in the margins of this prayer book; none seems to have any bearing on the text.
