Box with Romance Scenes

French

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 14

The scenes on this coffret, drawn from stories of Alexander the Great, the legends of King Arthur, and other medieval tales, all attest to the power of love. The depiction of the unicorn on one end is indebted to a thirteenth-century French tale, the Bestiaire d'amour. A maiden holding a mirror has attracted a unicorn. As it lies peacefully in her lap, Love, in the guise of a skillful hunter, stabs it with a long spear.
