Lion at Rest

Not on view

The lion, traditionally associated with the kingly qualities of power and nobility, reclines in a bamboo grove beside a stream, with birds and insects in flight above him. As the animal gazes out onto his domain, he is nonchalantly relaxed and yet alert and full of latent power. Mughal patrons were intensely interested in the natural world, a taste cultivated by Emperor Akbar and pursued by his son Jahangir, whose favorite painters were required to accompany him on campaigns to record the natural wonders the emperor encountered.

This painting will be on view from June 20, 2015, through September 23, 2015.
