While traveling, Maximilian recorded his impressions on topics ranging from weather and topography to Indigenous peoples and their cultural practices. He later transcribed and edited his field notes into three handwritten manuscript journals. What is known of Bodmer’s interactions with his portrait subjects is chronicled in these ledgers, from decisions about self-presentation to the sitters’ responses to the watercolors. Here, Maximilian writes of Mandan chief Mató-Tópe posing for a full-length portrait and sketches Péhriska-Rúhpa dressed in Hidatsa Dog Society regalia (see related works nearby).
