Mih-Tutta-Hangkusch, Mandan Village
Karl Bodmer Swiss
Not on view
Maximilian wrote of the traffic on the frozen Missouri River near the Mandan winter villages, where "women, children, men, and dogs pulling small sleds can be seen all day long." Here, a steady stream of Mandan people traverse the ice carrying home supplies obtained at Fort Clark. On the distant bluff sits the recently built fort, surrounded by a wood stockade. Low semicircular earth lodges distinguish the neighboring Mandan summer village of Mih-Tutta-Hangkusch. Mandan and Hidatsa winter villages were located in the forested river bottoms, where trees shielded the lodges from frigid winds.
