Banks of the Missouri

Karl Bodmer Swiss

Not on view

Bodmer painted many of his river views while aboard a steamboat, often when stalled by sunken trees or sandbars. Viewed from the "Yellow Stone", this scene shows the "Assiniboine" making its way along the Missouri’s shallow waters and snaking curves. Cedar trees line the crevices of distant bluffs, and cottonwoods fringe the riverbanks, preventing erosion. Maximilian observed blackbirds, northern flickers, snakes, and prairie dogs in the region. He also noted nearby Lakota hunting camps and evidence of controlled prairie burns, a land stewardship practice that revitalizes soils and promotes the growth of healthy grasses.
