Basket bowl
Lucy Telles Miwok and Southern Miwok
Not on view
These three works reflect the diversity of California basketry and the evolution of traditional styles. The example by Linda Hancock is classically shaped and features a pattern of human figures with joined hands, perhaps dancers in a community ceremony. Mary Winkle abandoned the Panamint Shoshone convention of placing dark figures on a light ground, instead weaving pale yellow and black patterns that float above a deep reddish-brown. Lucy Telles’s artistic vision and technical skill are revealed in the precisely controlled stitch count and design of her rounded, flat-shouldered basket bowl.
