Basket bowl

Lizzy Toby Peters Washoe

Not on view

This basket and the one adjacent by accomplished Washoe artists are variations on the classic degikup form invented by Louisa Keyser (an example is on display nearby). The distinctive shape features a narrow round base, spherical body, and relatively small opening. Lizzy Peters’s interpretation appears more freely woven than most. Two encircling zigzag bands, one dark and flame-like and a second constructed of closely aligned rectangles, are opposed by four inverted triangles. Together, they establish a balance of upward and downward energy.
