Powhoge polychrome storage jar

Tewa, Native American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 746

This grain storage jar’s precise balance between volumetric form and painted imagery is characteristic of the finest Pueblo ceramics. The black-on-white banded design is a rhythmic progression of geometric motifs. Most striking are the inverted triangles with abstracted leaf or feather shapes extending from the bottoms, all enclosed in stepped cloud formations. Narrow lines of red emphasize the rim and create a visual transition from the body of the jar to its rounded base.
